Pole Pads and Gym Wall Padding in Eastern Pennsylvania

A large share of eastern Pennsylvania gyms were built between the 1920s and the 1950s, and the wall behind the baseline is rarely what people assume. Brick, poured concrete, concrete block and glazed hollow tile all show up in buildings from that era, sometimes in the same room. That matters because a plywood-backed wall panel has to be fastened to something that will hold. Before you order, tell us what the wall is, or drill one test hole in an out-of-play corner and send us a photo of the dust and the depth. A fastener sized for solid block will spin free in hollow tile.

The second constraint is getting the panels into the room. Plywood-backed panels are rigid, and a 2 ft x 8 ft panel does not turn a tight stair landing or fit through a 36 in door on an angle. Older Philadelphia and Lehigh Valley schools frequently put the gym up a half flight or behind a service corridor, so measure the delivery path before you settle on panel length. Where the turn will not take 8 ft, 2 ft x 6 ft panels solve it with one extra seam. This is also why the older buildings need padding at all: NFHS basketball asks for at least 3 feet, and preferably 10 feet, of unobstructed space outside the boundary lines, and pre-war floor plans almost never have it.

There is no standard post size in this industry, and the gooseneck backstops in a 1955 township gym rarely match the ones in the school two miles away, so measure every post instead of reusing a number off an old work order.
